How to change the turn signals on a motorcycle?
Whether for a car or a motorcycle, the indicator plays an essential role when driving. Have you just noticed that your motorcycle's turn signals are dysfunctional? You have the option of replacing them yourself. The process is quite simple, you just need to have the right technique. Trust our tutorial on turn signals.
Equip yourself with essential tools
Above all, to successfully change the indicators on your motorcycle, you must have certain important tools at hand, including:
- A set of wrenches and a screwdriver;
- Long-nose pliers;
- A stripping pliers;
- Crimping pliers;
- A special product for cleaning electrical contacts.
- Self-welding terminals
In principle, these are materials accessible in a DIY store, with the exception of the special product for cleaning electrical contacts. The latter is available on platforms specializing in two-wheeled vehicle maintenance products.
Proceed carefully to remove the old front indicator
When changing the turn signal on your two-wheeled vehicle, you must disconnect the negative battery cable . To easily unscrew the indicator, use a wrench. Once this is done, unscrew the headlight plate. This is the best way to access the electrical connection. You should know that the indicator is connected to the electrical circuit via the terminals. You just have to remove the insulation sheath to be able to handle the terminals . When you have access to them, disconnect them. If you have difficulty releasing the indicator, pull lightly.
Do you need to change two front indicators? It is not recommended to unplug them simultaneously. You run the risk of reversing the connections when installing new equipment. To avoid this inconvenience, take one or two photos of the original connection . You will be able to redo the initial connection.
Change the front indicator
To install the new indicator, the cable of the new indicator must be inserted through the passage in the headlight plate. When you are finished, pre-screw the turn signal mounting nut onto the headlight plate. Then simply connect the new equipment to the control unit using the existing terminals. The long-nose pliers will be very useful for tightening the terminals.
Do you have the impression that the terminals of the new turn signals are not compatible with those of the terminals on your motorcycle? All you have to do is cut the electrical wires with wire cutters. Once that's done, strip the wires and twist the leather core. Connect the terminal to the end of the wire. If there is no insulation sheath, use sealing tape. It will be used to protect the connections.
Install a new rear indicator
For this type of flashing, you will apply the same principle. As the connections are present under the saddle , you will have to unscrew it before touching the cables.
Choosing LED turn signals
More and more two-wheeled vehicle drivers are praising the merits of LED turn signals. In fact, these are more advantageous pieces of equipment. They are renowned for the power of their lighting , their low consumption and their longevity. Whether you live in France or in a foreign country, you can purchase LED indicators of all kinds on our online store.
Are you considering replacing your classic (bulb) indicators on your vehicle with LED indicators? Make sure you make the correct electrical connections. In this context, it is necessary to connect the resistors (one for each indicator) or an LED control unit . This is a way to prevent the flashing frequency from being too fast .
It is important to connect the resistors in parallel . This helps bridge the wattage difference between the replaced bulbs and LEDs. Did you previously have classic 18 watt indicators? Are you considering replacing them with a 2 watt LED flasher? In this case, you must have a 16 watt resistor.
Place the resistances in a ventilated place under the saddle . Their temperature can reach 100°C. Carefully choose the location where you are going to install them. Avoid placing resistors near plastic parts. It is not recommended to surround them with adhesive tape. Once the connections are complete, use a product to clean the electrical contacts.
